8 Things You NEED To Know Before Buying Your First Cricut.

8 Things You NEED To Know Before Buying Your First Cricut.

So, you’re thinking about losing your Cricut-ginity (Cricut Virginity) by finally purchasing that crazy crafting machine you’ve seen all over Pinterest, Instagram, and home shopping networks for years now, huh?

Well, this magical device from the heavens MAY make a more significant impact on your life than you expect.

It feels good to have other people appreciate your creative handiwork, and with the Cricut, your creativity can go crazy with hardly any limits.

Sounds amazing, right?!

Well, I can tell you from experience, when you realize what you’re capable of creating, it can boost your confidence in ways that you never thought possible.

Here are 8 things I wish I knew before I got my first Cricut machine:

1. Your Home Will Become Unrecognizable…

Photo: Cricut

Prepare to have your newly organized pantry, shelves and closets envied by all of your friends and family. With your Cricut, you’ll be able to label and organize your home in ways that you never thought possible… and everyone is going to want to know your secret.

Once you hear your first, “OMG!” when someone sees what you’ve created… you’ll be hooked.

Forewarning: Once you get started transforming your home, it’ll be hard to kick the habit.

2. You Need To Get Your Craft Together…

Let’s be real… to do this whole Cricut thing the right way, you’re going to want/need a crafting space to call your own.

Trust me on this; I’ve tried packing up my crafting supplies and storing them away after every single use, only to have to pull everything right back out onto our kitchen island the next time I wanted to use it… and frankly, it sucks.

Not only is it frustrating, but it’s also harder (in my opinion) to keep everything organized like you need it to be. I’m not sure about you, but whenever crafting begins to feel like a chore, every ounce of creativity I have in the moment goes flying out the window.

If having enough space is an issue, I FEEL your pain. Up until September 2019, we were living in a temporary home that was approximately 600 square feet. The mere thought of finding a crafting area was overwhelming, but as a creative person, the idea of not having a designated crafting space felt even worse.

What was my solution? Well, I ended up taking the tiny closet/laundry room duo in our bedroom and added a crafting station into the mix. I used a small stool and the top of our dresser as my designated area. And you know what, it worked! There were a million things I would’ve changed if I could’ve, but it served a purpose, and that was all that mattered.

Your crafting area doesn’t need to be a vast, luxurious craft room like some that you may see on Pinterest… it could be as simple as an armoire or closet that opens to reveal a desk with craft storage lining the walls/door(s). Use your imagination and get creative! There are no rules, just do what makes you happy.

3. Cricut-ing Is Not Just a Craft… It’s A Way of Life.

Yes, I realize how dramatic this statement may sound, but if you’re anything like me, once you get a taste of what you can do with your Cricut, you’re going to want ALL the Cricut accessories that Hobby Lobby, Joann’s, or Michael’s carries.

Now, there’s no denying that the more Cricut accessories you have, the more you can create, but what I want to stress to you is that not all of it is necessary and it can get REALLY expensive REAL quick!

Your Cricut & Cricut accessories can be a great investment that you can make a killing with by simply selling your creations on Etsy and at Craft Fairs, but I also believe that you should work with what you can afford first before turning around and investing more money into your device.

Never spend more than you can afford at the moment, as great as the Cricut is, it’s not a vital necessity.

4. You May Get Addicted to Weed… ing.

Weeding. We’re talking about the Cricut here… not the other green “stuff.”

For those who may not be familiar with the Cricut or the Cricut tools, weeding is the process of picking out everything (paper, vinyl, etc.) that’s not a part of your design. Think of it as going through your flower bed and picking out all of the weeds and only leaving behind your beautiful plants.

The process of weeding vinyl is oddly meditative, and for those into ASMR… well, this may become your newest obsession.

5. You May Have Found Your New BFF…

One of the really cool things about Cricut Design Space is that it’s an App! What’s better than being able to take your own virtual design studio with you wherever you go and give you the freedom of designing something on a whim when those creative juices start flowing.

6. It’s A Family Affair…

If you have kids, just be warned, they may love your Cricut just as much as you do. In fact, it can be a fun family project and something that you can bond and make memories over.

One really cool feature that your kids (or your inner child) are going to love about Cricut Design Space is that you can download licensed character images from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, etc. and use them in your creations.

How cool is that?!

7. Cricut Gurus Aren’t Made Overnight…

When first starting with your new Cricut, the temptation to dive headfirst into some massive projects is REAL, but so is the frustration when things don’t work out quite as you imagined.

My advice? Well, as hard as it may be… start small.

Start out with a ready-to-make (AKA pre-made) paper or vinyl project in Cricut Design Space; this will help you so much in the long-run by building your confidence and giving you the “feel” for how to use the Cricut machine and tools.

8. You NEED To Fail

I know, I know… not the happiest note to end on, but having a project flop is one of the best things that can happen to help you finetune your skills.

Trust me when I say that having a project go beyond the point of “no return” is necessary when it comes to unleashing that inner Cricut Guru that’s hiding deep inside of you.

I know it sounds SO CLICHÉ, but genuinely embracing your mistakes and learning from them is the best thing you can do to speed up your progress. Remember, you can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs along the way.

DIY Starbucks Holiday Christmas Cup Ornament 2019

There’s just something so magical about the arrival of the iconic red Starbucks Holiday Christmas Cup. For me, it’s one of the first signs that Christmas is right around the corner.

I wanted to commemorate this iconic holiday cup and what better way to do that than in ornament form?!

The best part? This project is SO easy that your kids could do it… with your help and supervision, of course!

Hang on to your Starbucks, ’cause we’re about to get crafty…

MATERIALS:

5oz. paper Dixie Cups

Red Paint – I used the Gloss 20415E Red Gloss paint by Apple Barrel

Extra Fine Glitter (Red / Ruby, Green / Emerald, Gold / 24 Karat)

Spray Foam – Large Gaps Foam by GE

Ornament Hooks by Holiday Time

Sticker Paper (8.5″ x 11″)

Green Straw

Elmers Glue

Hot Glue Gun

Craft Stick / Popsicle Stick

Scissors

Paint Brush

Grocery Bag / Paper Bag

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1 – Paint the Dixie cups red. 1 coat does the trick, the glitter added in a later step will cover any design that’s showing through. Wait until thoroughly dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 2 –  Paint on a thin coat of Elmers glue.

Step 3 – While the glue is still wet, cover the exterior of the cup in an extra fine red glitter. Wait until thoroughly dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 4 – Stuff a grocery bag or paper bag into the bottom of the cup prior to filling with foam. This step allows you to make the spray foam stretch further.

Step 5 – With the nozzle pointed down in the cup, start SLOWLY spraying the foam while moving the nozzle in a circle.

IMPORTANT: This foam will grow 2-3x the original size. LESS IS MORE!

Step 6 – Take a craft stick and start sculpting the foam into the shape you want it to be.

Step 7 – Sprinkle gold / 24 karat (or any color you’d like) extra fine glitter to the still wet foam.

Step 8 – Trim the green straw to approximately 3″, Paint a thin coat of Elmers glue onto the straw and then cover with green/emerald extra fine glitter.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to insert the straw into the foam while the foam is still wet. The foam will dry / harden around the straw and secure it into place.

Step 9 – Print out the Starbucks logo (download at the bottom of this page) on to 8.5″ x 11″ sticker paper, cut out, and apply to the front of the cup.

Step 10 – After the foam fully cures, spray a clear sealant over the entire ornament. Wait until fully dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 11 – Hot glue the ornament hook to the top of the foam.
